Midweek Morsel: God Speaks When He Seems Silent

5771861523_5c38e5529e_zAs children of God, we eventually go through periods when God seems quiet—we might even think of them as desert times. Last fall I shared about just such a period in my life lately. We may wonder why God is being silent, why he is not speaking to our spirits as clearly as in the past.

In truth, God speaks to us even in the silence. For example, at times when I may not hear his voice in my spirit, I still hear him speak through his Word. Also consider what Margaret Feinberg says on this topic in her book The Organic God:

“But as I practice the art of listening to God, I am discovering that he is surprisingly talkative even in the silence. Prayers are not going unanswered as much as he is responding in unexpected ways. . . . His voice is found in the wisdom of friends and spiritual leaders. He whispers through dreams and visions and abundant provision. He speaks through both conscience and conviction and an undeniable sense that some thoughts are more like God-thoughts than my own. He even speaks in the silence.”

So let’s take heart, friends, even when God seems quiet. Let’s listen. Let’s be alert to the unexpected. Our loving Father will indeed speak.

“. . . ‘Speak, LORD, for your servant is listening. . .’” 1 Samuel 3:9

Leap of Faith

4267296698_32c6a5871b_z

As I opened the blinds and looked out into the backyard one winter morning, a neighborhood daredevil unknowingly treated me to his early morning leap of faith.

With the trees still leafless, a darting movement in the branches quickly caught my eye. As I looked more closely, I could see that it was a squirrel — though he quickly proved he was not just any squirrel. He must have thought he was Wonder Squirrel or something. He skillfully zoomed higher and higher and then boldly ventured out on the tiniest limb. Before I could finish thinking where is he going? I bet he’s going to jump, he did it, hesitating only ever so slightly before his leap.

After sailing through the air to the closest limb of a nearby tree, he landed his leap with the sure-footedness of . . . well, a squirrel. He completely trusted that limb. He seemed to know it would hold his weight, that it would catch him. And he was right. It bent, but it didn’t break. It seemed to bounce back at just the right speed, allowing him to keep his balance and continue on his frenzied little journey.

Watching this little daredevil’s leap of faith, I immediately thought of the times we are called upon to jump into our Father’s arms. You know, the times when God wants us to trust him. The times when he wants us to go where he’s calling us to go or do what he’s asking us to do, even when it means stepping out into the unknown. He wants us to believe he will catch us and help us maintain our balance as we journey on with him. He wants us to trust him completely.

I want to be ready to do just that—to trust God completely. How about you? Any other daredevils out there?

“Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see.” Hebrews 11:1

Accent Bridal or Bridesmaid Sash with a Brooch

3544373981_1e396ca374_zMother of the Bride, here is a gorgeous way to accent a sash worn on Wedding Day—a dazzling brooch! The sash itself, of course, is a beautiful accent, but by adding a brooch, the wow factor is taken up to a whole new level.

A sparkling brooch accent will work well for anyone in the bridal party whose attire includes a sash. Whether it’s the bride, the bridesmaids, or even you, MOB, a beautiful brooch will add a special touch that can perfectly complete the wearer’s ensemble for the day.

A brooch will also provide a keepsake memento from this most special of occasions. It can easily be used with other outfits over the years and be a sweet reminder of a wonderful celebration with people you love. Definitely a win-win when it comes to accessories!

If your daughter has chosen gowns—hers or her maids—with sashes, be sure to show her this idea, MOB. And you might even want to shop for a dress with a sash now for yourself, right?!

Cute Engagement Photo Idea: Include the Dog!

4516104089_ed08da4839_z

Mother of the Bride, does your daughter have a running list of possible engagement photo ideas to share with their wedding photographer?

If so—and if your little gal and her guy have a much loved dog (or other pet)—here’s an idea you’ll want to share with her pronto. Have the photographer include their pooch in a shot!

Including the couple’s dog is such a fun idea, and I especially like the super cute way it’s done in the photo above—doggie in the center with the Mr. & Mrs.-to-be planting kisses on him or her at the same time. Of course, the photographer will probably take a series of shots with the dog, so I’m sure they’ll be sure to get several great photos.

So MOB, share this photo with your sweet couple and keep your eyes peeled for other unique ideas. They’ll appreciate every great idea you can send their way!

Midweek Morsel: Secure in God

Mount Moran from Oxbow BendMuch can happen in our lives to shake our security. On a national front, terrorists seek to steal any sense of security and safety we as Americans may have as we live our daily lives. On a personal front, serious losses can rock us to the core. Loss of a loved one, loss of a job and steady income, loss of good health, loss of a marriage. Rejection, failure, and betrayal can all leave us trying to make our way through life on wobbly legs.

What is the answer? Our only certain security lies in God, in depending on and trusting in him. With God by our side, we can indeed experience peace, rest, and joy as we depend on him, when we follow him and allow him to be our strength.

So what are we waiting for? Let’s place our trust in God. Let’s rest secure in him.

“I have set the LORD always before me,
Because he is at my right hand,
I will not be shaken.
Therefore my heart is glad and my tongue rejoices;
my body also will rest secure,” Psalm 16:8-9
