Table or Mantelpiece Décor Idea for a Rustic Wedding

9299820983_c9659fff52_z

Nothing says rustic wedding like tree branch candle holders, Mother of the Bride. Whether using them as the key element of your daughter’s centerpieces or as décor on other tables, mantelpieces, or windowsills, they add the perfect outdoorsy touch to a rustic themed wedding.

Try a trio of tree branch candle holders for the central portion of a centerpiece or cluster a few different sizes together in other places needing a touch of décor. You might even take a linear approach in certain spots and arrange them from tallest to shortest. Fill out your arrangements with fresh-from-the-forest greenery and flowers or other accents in the color of the wedding, and voila—a rustic wonderland!

It’s hard to beat nature and candlelight, isn’t it, MOB? If your happy couple wants to go rustic, give tree branch candle holders a try!

Midweek Morsel: Love—A Multifaceted Jewel

4266283238_401d102b93_o

What does love look like in your life or in the lives of those you know? Think beyond the obvious sweetheart love and you’ll begin to see the many faces of love.

Love is a jewel—a multifaceted jewel—that sparkles in myriad ways. Consider what Dwight L. Moody had to say about love:

“Joy is love exalted; peace is love in repose; long-suffering is love enduring; gentleness is love in society; goodness is love in action; faith is love on the battlefield; meekness is love in school; and temperance is love in training.”

Love is so much more than a feeling. Did you notice how active love is? And did you see that it seems to be the foundation for so many fruits of the Spirit? Is love sparkling in your life and mine?

“And now these three remain: faith, hope, and love. But the greatest of these is love.” 1 Corinthians 13:13

Wedding Day Need: Corsage and Boutonniere Pinner

Shawn getting his bout

Mother of the Bride, do you have someone lined up to pin the corsages and boutonnieres for everyone on Wedding Day? If this is one thing that hadn’t occurred to you yet, go ahead and add it to your list of things to do. And while you’re at it, you might want to arrange for a back-up.

Your florist may offer to pin the flowers for you, but if so, be sure to have a Plan B in place. When Kristin and Shawn got married, the florist told us he’d take care of it for us, but when we arrived at the church, he’d already been there, dropped all the flowers off, and left. Thank goodness, one of Shawn’s groomsmen had experience with event planning. Hamilton stepped up and saved the day. (Thanks, Hamilton!)

If you’re lucky enough to have a wedding coordinator, he or she will take care of this task. When Kelli and Jake got married, their church had a wedding coordinator that worked with each couple getting married in their church. She did the pinning as a part of her services. And was I ever thankful. Let’s just say I am not mechanically inclined :)

Make sure you have this wedding day need filled, MOB. This is one job you don’t want to have to do when your nerves may already be jangled!

Balance: A Needed Counterweight to Focus

8-7-12 388We all know focus is a good thing, don’t we? Without it, we fall short of reaching goals, attaining new skills, developing talents, or pursuing our interests and dreams. In order to excel, in order to achieve, staying focused is vital.

But sometimes focus can go too far. Sometimes we’re so absorbed in reaching a goal or even enjoying a project or hobby that we miss other important things going on around us. At times focus might keep us from experiencing blessings—maybe the beauty of the early morning dew on a flower or a conversation with a loved one—or it might even cause us to neglect one of our responsibilities.

And so we see that balance is also needed. Each of us must discover that perfect blend of making focus a priority while also allowing ourselves to give attention to not-to-be-missed moments and important tasks.

This endeavor—the quest for balance—takes a great deal of awareness and self-discipline. We must be aware when focus has gone too far and then discipline ourselves to stop and redirect our attention for the moment. We also must have the self-discipline necessary to eventually get back to business and refocus on our original task.

For example, I’ve developed a love for taking photos so I must make time for it in the midst of my work and my day’s agenda. But I also need to know when to set it aside and get back to work. I need balance.

Even when pursuing my photography hobby, I need balance. Many times I’m so focused on getting the best pictures I possibly can, I catch myself looking at life too much through a lens instead of enjoying the moment and looking at the beauty before me from a normal vantage point. True, I have to focus and take lots of shots if I hope to get good pictures, but relishing the experience is important, too. I must discipline myself to balance the two.

What areas of your life (and mine) are crying out for balance? Will we summon the self-discipline needed to find that balance? Remember, I’m not suggesting we abandon focus—a very good and necessary action—but rather that we temper it with balance, an equally good and needful pursuit. Let’s ask God to help us find the perfect blend of the two. He’s always happy to help, isn’t he?

“If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him.” James 1:5

Engagement Photo Idea: Playground Fun

DSC_6196

Mother of the Bride, here’s a great engagement photo idea if your daughter and future son-in-law are a playful and fun-loving couple: a little playground fun! Not every couple would enjoy this adventure or look natural in the shots, but you know your girl and her guy—could they pull it off?

My daughter Kelli and her love Jake pulled off playground shots with ease. If there’s adventure or fun to be had, they’re right in the middle of it. If your sweet couple lives life likewise, have your daughter suggest playground shots to their photographer.

Slipper slides or swings, monkey bars or rope swing, whatever is handy will do. Be sure to request shots in both color and black and white. Sometimes black and white takes a photo to a whole new level of awesome.

So MOB, pass along this super-fun idea. Bet it will wind up on the photo table at the reception!
