Thievery — Strawberries and Beyond

It’s hard to beat juicy red strawberries fresh from the patch — and I must say the birds seem to agree with me.

Those ornery things certainly know what they’re doing. They bide their time, waiting for the berries to change from a pale green to a bright red, signaling that the fruit is now tasty and ripe for the picking. What they fail to realize (or are simply ignoring!) is that those berries are ours for the picking. My husband Don planted the patch years ago, and it’s in our yard. But the lure of the delicious fruit has turned our friendly neighborhood birds into sneaky strawberry patch trespassers. Cute trespassers, yes, but trespassers nonetheless :)

Their thievery is nothing new. It happens every May. The thing that makes their crime so heinous this year, though, is that the patch didn’t produce last year. In fact, for whatever reason (probably the dry summer preceding), it almost completely died out. We didn’t enjoy even one fresh-from-the-patch strawberry last spring.

But miracle of all miracles, the patch made a comeback this season. No, it’s not back in all it’s glory yet, but several plants are up and sending out runners, and most importantly, producing their coveted red diamonds. Uhhh, I mean strawberries :)

As you can tell, I love strawberries straight from the patch (so much tastier than those from the grocery store), and I don’t particularly feel like sharing with the birds this year. After all, we didn’t get any berries last year, and this year’s comeback fruit is precious indeed. So if you drive by and see me running through the yard waving my arms, you’ll know I’m after some ornery little trespassers :)

Anyone trying to steal your fruit? Oh, you may not have fruit in a patch or on a tree, but I bet you’re growing fruit of an even more important variety — the good fruit the Lord is growing in you. Things like love and forgiveness or patience and a giving spirit. Maybe it’s courage or perseverance or perhaps even leading others to know Him.

We have an enemy who knows what he’s doing and is willing to bide his time until just the right moment. He wants to sneak in and steal our fruit, and our joy, and our walk with the Lord. And he’ll use about anything or anyone to do it. Let’s be alert to his tactics and run the ole trespasser off every chance we get, okay? Remember, our fruit is precious indeed!

Extra Sweet Winner, Extra Sweet Promise

Someone’s Mother’s Day is about to get a little sweeter! Time to announce the winner of the Extra Sweet Giveaway. The $15 gift card to Godiva goes to Teri! Congratulations, Teri ! Heavenly times ahead, huh?

As for the rest of you, try not to feel too left out. After all, we who’ve given our hearts to Jesus have heavenly times ahead, too — and I’m not talking chocolate. I’m talking eternal life in heaven with Him.

Just look at these promises from the Word of God:

“For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Romans 6:23

Jesus said, “‘In my Father’s house are many rooms; if it were not so, I would have told you. I am going there to prepare a place for you. I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am.'” John 14:2-3

And finally, recorded in the Word of God is what was revealed to the Apostle John:

“I saw the Holy City, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride beautifully dressed for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, ‘Now the dwelling of God is with men, and he will live with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.’ He who was seated on the throne said, ‘I am making everything new!’ Then he said, ‘Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true.'”

Ah, the hope and promise of heaven… You can’t get much sweeter than that!

Time for an Update

I admit it. I’m past due with a report. If you’ve been reading my blog for awhile, you may be wondering how my husband’s mother is doing now. I’d say it’s time for an update — and what better time to do it than in these days leading up to Mother’s Day.

As you may remember, Don’s mom endured a life-threatening health crisis during the first few months of last year. She has only one kidney, and it’s been failing for the past several years. No one thought she could pull out of last year’s crisis, but she surprised us all — again. She made it out of the hospital, and the kidney slowly began to rebound. Her kidney function remained worse than before the crisis, but at least it stabilized.

And now? I’m happy to report that she’s doing fairly well (knock on wood!). She goes to the hospital every week day for a fluid infusion to help keep the kidney working, but over the past few months her lab work shows that the kidney function is losing ground. Since it’s unable to filter out potassium the way it should, the doctor has put her on a low potassium diet to protect against danger for her heart when those levels get too high. The diet is working, and even though her health situation is not good, we’re thankful that she’s stable.

So there you have it. My overdue update. How about you? Is it time for an update to some of your friends or family members? Life stays so crazy busy, it’s easy to lose touch with one another. Don’t leave your loved ones in the dark. Call them, write them, go see them… There’s no better time than now!

I’ll Do It!

Ever need someone to volunteer to help out with a task or project you can’t accomplish on your own? I’ve been in just such a position the past several weeks and am happy to report God has provided the volunteers. (No, the baby above is not my volunteer, but she’s sure a cute example, isn’t she? :) )

Many of you will remember that I became our church’s Angel Tree coordinator about a year ago. Most folks associate Angel Tree with Christmas, but many Angel Tree programs offer outreaches and ministry to prisoners’ families at other times during the year as well. For example, we sent Mother’s Day/Father’s Day cards to the prisoners last year and also offered Angel Tree Camping and Back to School ministries for the children. This year a few ladies are also sending birthday cards to the kids throughout the year.

Since right now I’m in the thick of helping my daughter plan her wedding, I needed volunteers to step up and take care of this year’s Angel Tree summer outreaches. I knew if I tried to stuff any more organizational details or tasks into my mind and life, I just might burst. Definitely not a good idea. After all, the mother of the bride needs to be able to hold it all together come what may.

So…several weeks ago, I asked my friend Lisa if she’d be willing to be in charge of the Mother’s Day cards, and she said “yes” right away (thanks, Lisa!). Early this year, I began praying for someone to volunteer to do Angel Tree Camping and have been making the need known in our church for the past couple of months as well. The weeks went by with no one offering to take it on (it’s a big commitment, by the way).

With the time growing ever shorter to be able to pull it off, I felt awful (and guilty!) to think we might not be able to offer camping to our Angel Tree kids this year. Just this past week, however, Melissa, one of our missions committee members, stepped up to organize this vital ministry to the hurting kids of prisoners in our area. Thank you, Melissa! An eternal difference might be made in the lives of some of these precious kids because of your willingness to serve!

I wonder — is God calling you to step up and fill a needed ministry position or perhaps lighten the load of a friend? Are you ready to say, “I’ll do it!”? Believe me, you might be just the one who helps someone hold it all together. You might be just the one who makes an eternal difference.

“Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.” Galatians 6:2
