A Time to Hide

When he had finished speaking, Jesus left and hid himself from them.” John 12:36b

Ever have times when you feel like hiding?  I bet we all do—and we’re in good company. The apostle John tells us that Jesus hid, too.

The instance in the scripture above took place in Jerusalem during the week before Jesus’ crucifixion. While speaking to a crowd, he predicted his death and encouraged the people to “‘trust in the light . . . so that you may become sons of light,’” and then he left and hid from them.

We aren’t told why Jesus hid from the people at this time. Maybe he needed a break from the crowd surrounding him daily, or possibly he was trying to prevent an uproar that could lead to his death before the time was right. He might have wanted the people to have time to consider what he’d just said. Whatever the reason, Jesus saw the importance or felt the need to hide.

An oft-quoted passage from the Bible tells us that “There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under heaven.”(Ecclesiastes 3:1) If Jesus saw that there was indeed a time to hide, should we not secret ourselves away at times as well?

So when should we hide away—either from everyone, those outside our closest circle, or maybe just from our work environment?

One time might be when we’re in serious need of rest or refreshment. Another could be when we need some time to focus on a certain project, person, or aspect of our lives.

There may even come a time when we need a period of healing or a season when we need to hide for protection. And we always benefit when we take time to hide away with the Lord, through daily time in prayer and the Word and also in extended times alone with him.

I wonder if it’s a time to hide for any of us right now. Can we sense the importance of such a time? Do we feel the need? Let’s remember that there is indeed a time for everything. Yes, even a time to hide.

“. . . hide me in the shadow of your wings” Psalm 17:8b

Five Years of Blogging

I couldn’t let September 17th go by without bringing a mini-milestone to light. After all, five years of blogging deserves a mention, right? It might even call for some chocolate! :)

A few of you have probably been with me from the beginning and several more for three or four of those years now. Some of you are relatively new, possibly stopping by for only the last year or so. Whatever your time frame with me, I’m so happy you make me a part of your life.

That’s probably the best part of blogging—the opportunity to touch the lives of others, being able to bless and encourage and being blessed and encouraged in return. Your support and friendship mean so much to me.

To celebrate my five-year mark, let’s have some fun. For each of you who leave a comment on this post, I will leave a comment back (though I may group a few remarks in one comment) telling you five words or phrases that come to mind when I think of you. Five for five. Fun, huh?

If I don’t know you very well, feel free to go ahead and play. It will just challenge my creative abilities, right? And that will be fun, too :)

So go ahead. Leave a comment and find out my five for five for you. I’m so thankful for you all!

“[I] love you so much that [I am] delighted to share with you not only the gospel of God but [my life] as well, because you have become so dear to [me].” 1 Thessalonians 2:8

Relish the Moment

5186443909_d26eacd4d3_zIn a recent blog post, writer and blogger Jeff Goins encouraged fellow writers to really take in our surroundings and relish moments, to let them inspire us and shape our writing. But even for those who aren’t writers, that’s still pretty good advice, huh? Be in the moment, be inspired, and let that refreshed perspective fuel whatever it is you might be doing.

Jeff finished his post by suggesting a writing exercise—to stop whatever we were doing and notice our surroundings, to spend a few minutes writing about whatever was around us. I took up his challenge to relish the moment and thought I would share the result with you. I hope it will inspire you to relish moments of your own and then let that inspiration spill out into other areas of your life. Let’s live our moments, friends!

A Weekend Moment

I’m at my desk, early morning shafts of light shining through the blinds, leaving their reflection on the nearby wall. A train whistles in the distance. I love that sound.

My husband’s on-again off-again snoring makes it past the bedroom wall. Truth be told, I’m not crazy about that sound. But it’s part of our lives, and we live with it.

Four stacks of papers look back at me from my desk. Projects in process or waiting to be done. Some needing a simple read-through, others needing heavy work or development. Always more ideas and projects than time.

Pictures of loved ones look back at me as well, filling me with gratitude for the love we share. Making me wish my grown up girls were here this weekend. Hoping they are enjoying life today.

The duties of the day nudge. Time to move on. These quiet moments are so important, though, especially the ones with my God. Time to go meet with Him on my back porch, to soak in His beauty, His love, His care.

“’Be still, and know that I am God . . . ‘” Psalm 46:10a

*Are you willing to take up the challenge? Stop whatever you’re doing and notice your surroundings. Relish the moment. And then why not tell us about it? It will be fun! :)

Quiet Time

Some people call it quiet time. Others call it devotions. Whatever you call it, I hope you’re spending time with God each day, reading His Word and drawing near to Him through prayer. I pray the following acrostic piece will encourage you to commune with the Father daily through personal quiet time with Him. It will change your life. He will change your life!

Quench your thirst for God—spend some time in His Word.

Unleash the power of the Holy Spirit and welcome His work in your life.

Invite the Lord to come and fellowship with you each day.

Enter into worship as you come into His presence.

Treasure your moments with the Savior, guarding them diligently.

Taste the goodness, the mercy, the unfailing love of our God.

Imitate all that you learn at His feet.

Meditate on the riches overflowing from His perfect, holy Word.

Enjoy a love relationship with Jesus, our living Savior.

“Taste and see that the Lord is good; blessed is the man who takes refuge in Him.” Psalm 34:8

*What devotional helps do you use? Where are you reading in the Word right now? This year I’m enjoying Sarah Young’s Jesus Calling and am also using Lifeway’s Journey devotional magazine for women. In the Word, I’m reading through Paul’s letters in chronological order and am currently in 2 Corinthians.

Time for Photo Fun

Okay, gang. The time has come. This mother of the bride needs to take a break from writing my regular posts. Our daughter’s wedding is fast approaching (July 17), and I need to focus my energies on making sure it all comes together. And then when all is said and done, I will need a very long nap :)

Actually, all won’t really be said and done just because the calendar reads July 18. We’ll still have some family visiting going on, Don will also be on break, and I’ll be trying to wade through all kinds of wedding paraphernalia — sorting, packing, and returning what we didn’t use. In other words — Hobby Lobby, I’m not done with you yet! :)

So… for the next several weeks (maybe even until mid-August), I’ll be posting photos that I think you might enjoy. Some will be wedding related, and others will be — well, who knows what the others will be :) Guess we’ll all find out together, huh?

Hope you enjoy seeing one more of Kelli and Jake’s engagement shots today as well as the rest of the Photo Fun Blast coming your way over the next few weeks here on the blog. May you find refreshment and joy in it while I find a little bit of rest. Everyone take care!

“The Lord replied, ‘My Presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.'” Exodus 33:14
