From God’s Hands to Ours

28-aLSP_1996

Last month God entrusted a gift beyond measure to our daughter Kristin and our son-in-law Shawn. He blessed them with precious twin sons, and as a result, my husband Don and I became grandparents and were above-and-beyond blessed as well. I’m still on cloud nine of Grandma heaven.

From God’s hands to ours. To Kristin and Shawn, the gift and responsibility of parenthood; and to us, the gift and responsibility of grandparenthood. Sacred trusts indeed. Trusts we don’t take lightly, especially after the long wait to receive these precious gifts.

Some of the gifts and tasks God entrusts to us are long-haul responsibilities. Parenthood and grandparenthood fall into that category. We will never outgrow those roles now. Isaiah and James will always be looking to us and depending on all of us to fulfill our respective roles.

Will we be faithful to always be there for these precious boys—these gifts God entrusted to us—saying and doing what’s best for them? I pray so. With God’s help, I know Kristin and Shawn will do their best and so will we.

From his hands to ours, God entrusts all of us with gifts, tasks, callings, and/or challenges. What people or things has he placed in your hands? In mine? Are we faithfully trying to honor the trust he’s given us? Are we in it for the long haul when needed? Let’s live up to God’s trust.

“Now it is required that those who have been given a trust must prove faithful.” 1 Corinthians 4:2

Photo Booth Fun for Your Wedding Guests

2766123047_0be2edddc9_z

Mother of the Bride, if your darling daughter and her soon-to-be husband are looking to step up the fun element for their wedding guests, how about providing a photo booth at the reception?

Not only would a photo booth provide a diversion while the guests are waiting on the bride and groom to arrive at the reception, but it would offer a fun entertainment addition to the dining and dancing going on later during the party as well. Plus, what a fun memento for your guests to take home as a reminder of the joy of the big event, right?

Having a photo booth on hand would also give your professional photographer another place to capture some great shots of everyone—the wedding party as well as the guests. With the casual and zany atmosphere a photo booth creates, candid shots are sure to abound.

So MOB, offer some photo booth fun on the big day. And in the midst of all your responsibilities at the party, don’t forget to jump in and experience some photo fun yourself!

Groom’s Cake Toppers for the Hunter

4060541650_b2fcf74c34_z

Mother of the Bride, does your daughter’s intended enjoy hunting? If so, why not suggest a hunting-inspired groom’s cake topper to reflect his outdoorsy nature?

The groom’s cake topper above features a duck hunter, but with a little creativity, your baker/cake designer could come up with any number of hunter variations. She could put your son-in-law to be in a deer stand, have him calling a turkey, or flushing quail or pheasant with his bird dog. Whatever his hunting preference, I’m sure a topper can be made to accommodate it.

So score some points with your huntsman son-in-law-to-be, MOB, and suggest his cake feature a weapon of some sort! :)

Midweek Morsel: Safe Home

9889198256_7bd45f1133_z

When loved ones are traveling, it’s always a relief when we know they’ve arrived safely home, isn’t it? We can’t rest until we know they’ve reached their destination and that they are indeed safe. Then peace settles around us like the comfort of a warm blanket.

For those of us who have accepted Christ as our Savior, it’s also a blessing to know that our loved ones who have passed are now safely home in heaven.

As my dad was coming to terms with the unexpected loss of my mom a little over a year ago, he told me that he’d always thought it would be best for him to go first—that she would do better alone than he would. But after he experienced her loss and what life was like without her, he said he was glad she went first. He was glad she didn’t have to go through what he was going through. “She’s safe home,” he said. And even in his grief, he found peace in that knowledge.

Whether we’re dealing with the loss of a loved one or thinking about our own mortality, we can find peace in the hope and comfort of heaven. And just think—one day we’ll all be safe home together.

“He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or pain . . .” Revelation 21:4a

Messages from the Dark

4279216_68f6e38afe*Today I’m featuring an encore post from February 2009. Hope it blesses you!

Any other perpetual calendar lovers out there? I admit to having three scattered throughout my house right now. Guess you could say I’m hooked on them. I look forward to the fresh inspiration they offer me each day — and to finding quotes I can use on the blog!

One morning last week, one of the calendar quotes really resonated with me. A couple of hours later, my scripture reading for the day held a verse that conveyed nearly the same message. I knew right away it must be a message worth sharing. Some of us may need it more than others right now, but I feel certain we can all learn from it.

My Whispered Words of Encouragement perpetual calendar contained these encouraging words from Oswald Chambers, early 20th century author and Christian minister: “When you are in the dark, listen, and God will give you a very precious message for someone else when you get into the light.”

Some of my recent days weathering the ongoing crisis with my mother-in-law’s health have been awfully close to “dark” — but could probably be described more accurately as very difficult.

Still, I identified with the message in a special way. I knew the Lord would use these difficult days to allow me to help someone in the future.

Later that morning, I read a verse from God’s Word that echoed what I’d read from Chambers. Jesus told his disciples, “‘What I tell you in the dark, speak in the daylight; what is whispered in your ear, proclaim from the roofs.’” (Matthew 10:27) Jesus had been telling his disciples about the persecution they would encounter as they ministered in His name, but I think we can apply the teaching to any dark time we may find ourselves in. The Lord will teach us things — will give us precious messages — that He will one day give us opportunities to share with others.

Just this morning, I jotted a few practical things down I’ve been learning over the past several weeks. As dark storm clouds roll across our lives, let’s listen for God’s messages, whether they are practical ideas or spiritual truths and comforts. Let’s ready ourselves to “proclaim from the roofs” the things God has taught us. We may proclaim them to a crowd or to just an audience of one hurting person. Wherever we proclaim them, let’s allow our messages from the dark to bring light to another.

“Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves have received from God. For just as the sufferings of Christ flow over into our lives, so also through Christ our comfort overflows.” 2 Corinthians 1:3-5
