Wedding Cake Design: Graduating Circles

2459564686_a4a1c66b61_z

Mother of the Bride, is it time for you and your daughter to start talking wedding cakes? If so, you’ll find a multitude of choices out there. Of course, your sweet girl may already have some pretty specific ideas about what she wants so that will help in narrowing down the options.

Allow me to throw one more cake design idea into the mix today—graduating circles! Notice how in the example above the circles get larger as each tier of the cake gets bigger. Makes for a striking look, doesn’t it? Very classy and elegant but with a touch of circle-y fun!

The basic circle design could then be complemented by a variety of other design elements. The choices are wide open as to the accents: flowers, bows, butterflies, brooches, etc. And your daughter could incorporate her wedding colors in any way she’d like as well.

MOB, why not show this wedding cake option to your darling bride-to-be? It might provide just the unique design she’s looking for—and she’ll have you to thank for it!

Winter Wedding Cake Idea: Snowflakes!

11665211356_49329191bc_z

Mother of the Bride, is your daughter planning a winter wedding? If so, you may just now be discussing some of the details that can come a little later in the wedding planning process. Things like wedding favors, send-off options, and possibly even the design of the wedding cake.

If your darling girl hasn’t already decided on her cake’s design, here’s an option to show her—snowflakes! The cake above (or something similar) would be especially perfect if she’s incorporating winter touches in other aspects of the wedding, too. The cake offers a great opportunity to highlight a theme if she so chooses.

The dark background in the cake above really helps set off the snowflakes, but I bet extra sparkly snowflakes or silver snowflakes could look gorgeous as well if your daughter prefers a more traditional white cake. Your cake baker may be able to provide the snowflakes, but if he or she asks you to do that, you should be able to find them at most craft, party, or discount stores.

So MOB, if your baby is planning a “baby, it’s cold outside” kind of wedding, share this cool (hee, hee) idea with her. A snowflake cake can be the crowning touch!

Traditional Wedding Cake Twist: The Naked Cake

25750767413_90d4de6235_zMother of the Bride, does your little bride-to-be like to choose the road less taken? If so, she might like to extend that philosophy to some of the choices she makes for her wedding—cake included!

One alternative or twist to a more traditional wedding cake is going with a naked cake.  The naked cake trend hit the wedding scene a couple of years ago. Naked cakes aren’t completely naked, of course, but frosting is limited to a more-ample-than-usual filling between the layers with various other touches on the outside of the cake.

The naked cake offers lots of options. Some brides choose to decorate their naked cakes with fresh fruit while others opt for flowers, powdered sugar, nuts, a combination of these, or even something more unusual like macarons or caramel and caramel corn. Different flavors of cake also add to any given cake’s unique appearance, and sometimes different layers feature different flavors of cake which also adds a neat visual twist to the cake.

So MOB, when your daughter announces she wants to go naked for the wedding reception, don’t despair—she’s probably talking cake!

Wedding Card Box Idea: A Wedding Cake!

DSC_5262Mother of the Bride, have you thought about a card box or container yet for the gift table at the church and the reception site? You don’t want those all important cards—with money or gift cards tucked inside—to get lost in the wedding day shuffle. What will you provide for your guests to deposit wedding cards in?

At our daughter Kelli’s wedding, we featured a card box designed like a wedding cake. It was the perfect solution and oh so pretty, too.

I got the idea from my sister Debbie after she made one for her son Adam’s wedding. Since I am not arts and craftsy at all, I asked my artistic friend Teri (who was my right-hand woman in so many ways) if she would be willing to make one for us. She happily agreed if I could provide instructions. Thank goodness Debbie was able to supply not only the instructions but a photo of her card box as well.

As you can see from the photo above (taken at the church before other gifts arrived), Teri did a beautiful job. She got most of her supplies during one of our shopping expeditions to Hobby Lobby . The photo below shows how it fit in with all the other gifts on the gift table at the reception site. Things got a little crowded!

Wedding Cake-Stand Idea: A Mirror!

448521650_5d1c948de2_z

Mother of the Bride, when it comes time to decide wedding cake details, I encourage you and your daughter to consider several options for cake stands. Maybe with some extra thought, you can avoid renting traditional cake stands for the wedding cake and/or groom’s cake from your baker.

For example, how about using a mirror as a cake stand? The mirror cake-stand above is pictured with a groom’s cake, but one could be used for the wedding cake, too, if you aren’t concerned about adding height to your cake.

A mirror as a cake stand not only provides a cool illusion but could also be used for other purposes after the wedding. So even though there will be some expense in purchasing a mirror, it will continue to benefit you after the wedding instead of simply losing your investment in a rental fee.

What do you think, MOB? Why not check with your daughter and see if a mirror might work well with the cake she has in mind? She might just love the thought of getting a bigger bang for the wedding cake buck!
