2025 Theme Word: Trust

What does starting a new year mean for you? For me, it means it’s time to focus on a new theme word. I’ve never been big into New Year’s resolutions, but this is the thirteenth year I’ve chosen a theme word to help guide me through the year. It’s a practice I highly recommend. I can honestly say it has benefited me year after year.

The word the Lord impressed on my heart for 2025? Trust. When the thought of choosing a new theme word first crossed my mind back in November, trust immediately sprang to mind. With all the uncertainties and new things on my horizon, I knew trust in God needed to be my focus. Trust has actually been my theme word before, but that’s okay. I need to keep it at the forefront of my mind again.

Of course, I never know all the Lord has in mind when guiding me to a new word, but this year the uncertainties that my husband’s Alzheimer’s continually colors our lives with will require ongoing trust in God for meeting not only the demands of the day but also the changes that may come. Changes that may require decisions for which I’ll certainly need wisdom and God’s direction.

This year also holds lots of challenges for me as I prepare for the October launch of Christmas For The Heart: 25 Devotions Reclaiming The Beauty And Wonder Of The Season, my new Christmas devotional book with B&H Publishing. I am thrilled and humbled to have the privilege to touch the lives of readers across our nation and perhaps beyond through this devotional, but the responsibility and work that goes along with preparing for the launch and promotion of it can be overwhelming, particularly if I’m relying on myself and my own abilities. Trusting God to guide and provide will be the only way I can handle it all.

So yes, trust in God is what I need right now in extra measure. And as the year unfolds, I may find that God has even more situations in store for trusting him. When it comes right down to it, every day should be an exercise in trusting God, shouldn’t it?

If you haven’t done so yet, why not choose a theme word for 2025? I can guarantee that having an over-arching word—a quality, an attitude, or an action—to focus on will help give you direction and help you grow throughout the year.

You’re welcome to join me in focusing on trust—it gives such freedom and peace when we’re trusting God instead of worrying or relying on our own wisdom, limited as it is. But I encourage you to give it some thought and prayer first. God may have another word in mind for you. Why not ask him? He is faithful to guide!

Free Fly Like Autumn Leaves

I love to watch the autumn leaves—and not just for their colors. I love to watch them fly as well.

The leaves of fall are free flying. They’re not bound by a must-follow route or a set of rules. No one tells them to drop at a perfect 90 degree angle—or any other angle. Each one is different. Each one takes its cue from the wind at the moment it falls.

Some fall headlong, landing right below their former homes. Others venture a few feet away as they drift gently through the air before finding a new resting place. Still others fly like crazy on the wings of a major wind gust, soaring as never before, looking like frolicking birds—up and down and all around, going great distances before running out of breath. Yes, autumn leaves are free flying.

Makes me want to do some free flying myself. Anyone else?

The good news is we can. As believers in Jesus, as children of God, we can free fly on the wings of his Spirit living within us. We can abandon ourselves to his leadership, whether on short straight paths, lilting walks, or adventures of a lifetime. Following the Spirit, we’ll soar as never before.

We can also free fly on the wings of encouragement. Sometimes all we need to be spurred on to try something new or go after a dream is the confidence inspired by a friend or family member who cheers us on. Sometimes all it takes is a little push. We then find ourselves free flying and loving every minute of it.

Other times it takes a little more. It takes a major gust of courage to launch our flight. The ride holds out hope of great and mighty things—but only if we’re willing to take the risk, only if we’re brave enough to step out of our comfort zones or battle whatever problems are trying to hinder our flight.

As the leaves free fly around us this autumn season, let’s ask ourselves if we’re ready to do a little free flying ourselves. Let’s abandon ourselves to the wings of the Spirit, let’s fly on words of encouragement. Let’s be bold and allow courage to carry us to new heights. Let’s free fly!

Midweek Morsel: Staying in Lonely Places

girl-491623_640“ . . . Jesus could no longer enter a town openly but stayed outside in lonely places . . .” Mark 1:45

Jesus knows what it’s like to be forced to stay in lonely places. Early in his ministry after people began to hear about his healing powers, crowds began to seek him out any time they caught news of his whereabouts. Jesus was no longer free to stay wherever he wanted. His growing popularity brought new limitations into his life.

Some of us may find ourselves in a situation or season of life that makes it necessary for us to stay in lonely places. For whatever reason, we’re not free to do what we want to do or go where we’d like to go. This new season, this new situation, has brought new limitations.

Isn’t it comforting to know that Jesus understands our disappointment and frustration, our grief and loneliness when we lose our freedom? Let’s not face time like these alone. Let’s turn to Jesus. He understands.
