I Should Be Writing, But…

2907706117_5c3e032074_bAh, the things a writer will do to avoid the work of writing :) Okay, I haven’t resorted to hanging on surfaces by my fingertips like the gal in the photo above (yet!), but I’ve managed to get sidetracked with nearly everything else.

When it’s time to get down to some serious work, I can be up and down and out of my chair more than a kindergartner on a sugar high. And I’m not the only one. From what I can tell, it’s a condition common to all writers.

For me, getting started on a new project is the hardest part, though last week I even had trouble focusing while in the middle of one. The blank computer screen (or piece of paper) looms pretty large. So until I can get going on a piece, you might catch me flitting around, taking care of any number of tasks that suddenly have taken on a new sense of importance. On the other hand, you might just find me looking for a snack :)

You may be wondering why writers have difficulty staying on task. The answer is simple — writing is hard. The finished product is rewarding, yes, but getting there can be agonizing. Searching for just the right word, laboring over a paragraph just to end up cutting it because it distracts rather than builds, working alone day after day, not giving up… All of this and more makes writing a challenging job — and one that takes a lot of self-discipline as well as remembering why we’re doing it in the first place.

Do you have a challenge that’s looming large? Are you having difficulty staying on task with something in particular? Remember, the finished product will be rewarding. Even –and especially — if you have to agonize to get there. Keep to it, friend…and so will I.

Changed Plans

Ever notice how life has a way of changing your plans in midstream? Between attending the out-of-town funeral for one of Don’s cousins and an impromptu visit by our youngest daughter and her intended, my writing time disappeared this weekend.

Instead of pushing myself and trying to write one of my regular posts when I’m tired, I thought I’d just share a photo of our time with Kelli and Jake. It was a quick visit, but we take whatever we can get with open arms and happy hearts. Okay, so I panicked a little first — but I wouldn’t be me if I didn’t do that! :) Truth is, we love it any time our kids can come home.

How has life changed your plans recently? Whether twists and turns are happy or sad, it’s good to know we have One traversing our paths with us, isn’t it? I pray God’s blessings on you this week!

Clearing the Way

A blast of winter white hit the Heartland once again this past weekend, and once again the ole snow shovel got a work-out as Don cleared our drive and walk-ways. He’d probably split hairs and say that he was the one who got the work-out, though. At least that’s what his back told him the next day :)

I tried to help, honestly I did. Since Don’s putting in another very demanding semester, I let him sleep in on Saturday while I got out and started the process, using my trusty broom to clear off the front and back steps as well as a path next to our cars.

Since I was still recovering from a bad flare-up of inflammatory arthritis in my shoulder, I knew I had no business sweeping snow, let alone shoveling it. I couldn’t resist the urge, however, to get out in it, even if it was just for a little while. And I did want to ease Don’s load if I could.

But I couldn’t. The sweeping motion proved to be too painful. I had to wake Don and put him to work, preparing the way for our cars — and our feet — to travel unhindered by January’s last gift to us. That extra effort, that preparation for our comings and goings, made all the difference over the next few days.

When I think back to the life of Jesus, there was one who prepared the way for Him, too. Before He began His public ministry, John the Baptist came preaching, telling the people that they needed to “‘Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is near.'” (Matthew 3:2)

Scripture tells us that people from the whole region came to listen to John – and it made a very big difference. Many confessed their sins and were baptized. Many were then ready to embrace Jesus when He began His ministry.

We may have a ministry or task awaiting us today, but some preparation may need to be done first if we hope to proceed unhindered. Someone may need to clear the way. Who’s that someone in your situation?

Me? I’m in the midst of preparations for our daughter’s wedding. I’m doing all I can to help clear the way for a wonderful wedding day celebration. And I have a feeling the extra effort will make all the difference…
