5 Things Every Bride-To-Be Needs to Hear from Her Mother

*I won’t be posting next week during Thanksgiving but will be back on Nov. 27. Have a happy Thanksgiving!

Mother of the Bride, as your daughter prepares to marry, she’s navigating a season like no other—as are you.

Not only are you both planning the biggest events you’ve probably ever planned, but you are both experiencing the shifting sands of changing family dynamics. She is shifting her primary loyalty to her husband-to-be and also developing relationships with his family while you are preparing for the final letting go as well as welcoming another family member into your family’s fold.

Since like any good mother, you’ll want to make her wedding planning experience and her family transition as easy as possible, here are 5 things she needs to hear from you right now. I pray that they will help both of you navigate the emotional mother-daughter waters you find yourselves in. May your season of planning and change go as smoothly as possible—and even hold unexpected blessings.

5 Things Your Bride-to-Be Daughter Needs to Hear from You

  1. This is your wedding, not mine, and you and your groom’s desires are the ones that matter the most. It’s okay, MOB, to share some of your most deeply held desires concerning the wedding—after all, it will be a highlight of your life and her dad’s life as well—but when it comes down to final decisions, those should reflect the couple’s desires.
  2. We welcome the love of your life into our family with open arms and will love him like a son. This will be a process of course as you may need time, MOB, to get to know him better, but just hearing your assurances of your welcoming love for him will mean the world to her.
  3. Even though you’re starting a new family, you’ll always be my dearly loved daughter who can count on me in good times and bad. At this critical time of family transition, MOB, your sweet girl needs to know that you’ll always love her and you’ll always be there for her. And as you assure her of your unchanging love, this will give her an opportunity as well to reassure you of your place in her heart.
  4. I’m sorry—I didn’t handle that very well. There may be (will be!) times during the wedding planning process, MOB, that you will say or do something that you wish you hadn’t. Tensions can run high at times and in those moments it’s so easy to act or speak in haste. When you’ve done something that hurts feelings or offends, apologize as quickly as possible. Keeping loving and peaceful relationships is the way to go.
  5. How can I help you? Whether with wedding details, relationship issues with any of her friends and family, or other day-to-day life stresses that can be compounded by the pressures she’s feeling as wedding day approaches, your girl needs you, MOB. Find out how you can best help her with whatever she’s going through. She will be forever grateful.

Good luck, MOB, as you and your precious daughter navigate the days ahead. May these pointers help along the way!

9 Love Quotes You Can Feature in Wedding Celebrations

Mother of the Bride, since love is in the air big-time where weddings are concerned, do you think your daughter and her beloved might like to use a love quote or two in some special way on their big day? If so, I’ve compiled a list of suggestions below that you might like to share with your starry-eyed bride and groom.

As they read through the options, tell them to consider the variety of ways a love quote might be incorporated. Doing this will certainly impact their decision if they do decide to use a quote about love in some aspect of their wedding celebration.

Love quotes could be used in a number of ways. Before the big day ever arrives, they might feature a famous love quote on their wedding invitation. On the big day itself, I’m sure the minister would be happy to include their choice during the ceremony, or they might want to feature it somewhere on their printed program.

Other ways to feature a quote include using on signs or plaques in the welcome area, on the cake and gift tables, or even used in some way in the centerpieces on the guest tables. Certain wedding favors even lend themselves to including a short message so that could be a possibility as well. After the big day, they might incorporate a quote in their thank you cards. These are just a few ideas. Bet you all will think of even others.

Here are 9 quotes the happy couple might want to consider. Keep in mind that even brief portions of them can be used for impact or because of space considerations. Hope these help!

“[Love] always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.” The Apostle Paul in 1 Corinthians 13:7 NIV

“What greater thing is there for two human souls than to feel that they are joined for life—to  strengthen each other in all labor, to rest on each other in all sorrow, to minister to each other in all pain, to be one with each other in silent, unspeakable memories.” George Eliot

“Love is the greatest refreshment in life.” Pablo Picasso

“If you live to be a hundred, I want to live to be a hundred minus one day so I never have to live without you.” A. A. Milne

“Lord, grant that I might not so much seek to be loved as to love.” Francis of Assisi

“Love does not consist in gazing at each other, but in looking outward together in the same direction.” Antione de Saint-Exupery

“There is no remedy for love but to love more.” Henry David Thoreau

“Love is the only gold.” Alfred Lord Tennyson

“Love is extravagant in the price it is willing to pay, the time it is willing to give, the hardships it is willing to endure, and the strength it is willing to spend. Love never thinks in terms of ‘how little,’ but always in terms of ‘how much.'” Joni Eareckson Tada

Hope these offer a good starting point, MOB, in your sweet couple’s search for the perfect quotes as they embark on their marriage journey. May it be one filled to the brim and overflowing with love!

Wedding Cake Topper Idea: Willow Tree Figurine

Mother of the Bride, have wedding cakes taken center stage in your wedding planning conversations with your daughter yet? When they do, not only will you be talking design, flavors, colors, frosting types, and cake stands, you’ll also be batting around ideas for cake toppers.

One simple and elegant cake topper option is to use a Willow Tree couple figurine. A Willow Tree couple topper will add beauty, romance, and the promise of commitment not only to the cake but to the festivities in general. It will also become a lasting memento and precious possession for the newlyweds.

Willow Tree actually offers three figurines that are designed specifically as cake toppers. If your bride and groom are interested, they will be able to choose from the Promise Cake Topper, the Together Cake Topper, and the Around You Cake Topper. Each one holds such meaning and beauty.

MOB, why not share this post with your daughter and her beloved and see if it captures their hearts. You could even buy the cake topper of their choice and give it to them as one of their shower or wedding gifts. A win-win for everyone!

9 Scriptures You Can Feature in Wedding Celebrations

Mother of the Bride, do you think your daughter and her beloved might like to use a scripture or two in special ways on their big day? If so, I have several to offer as suggestions.

First, though, consider the variety of ways that scripture might be incorporated. The minister will already have some scriptures he or she is planning to share during the ceremony, but if your sweet couple has a special verse or two they’d like included, I’m sure the minister would be happy to oblige.

Other ways to feature a scripture include using it on the printed program, on signs or plaques in the welcome area, on the cake and gift tables, or even used in some way in the centerpieces on the guest tables. Certain wedding favors even lend themselves to including a short message so a brief portion of scripture could be a possibility there as well. These are just a few ideas and others may come to mind when you all start thinking about it.

If the bride and groom need some ideas for specific verses, here are 9 scriptures they might want to consider (brief portions of them can be used instead of the entire verse if they so choose):

“‘Where you go I will go, and where you stay I will stay. Your people will be my people and your God my God.’” Ruth 1:16 NIV

“This is the day the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.” Psalm 118:24 HCSB

“The Lord has done great things for us, and we are filled with joy.” Psalm 126:3 NIV

“. . . love one another deeply, from the heart.” 1 Peter 1:22 NIV

“Love never fails.” 1 Corinthians 13:8 NIV

“Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ.” Ephesians 5:21 NIV

“. . . a man will leave his father and mother and be united with his wife, and the two will be one.” Ephesians 5:31 GW

“Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.” James 1:17 NIV

“My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you.” John 15:12 NIV

Whether your daughter and her groom use these scriptures in their celebration or not, MOB, may they bless you and yours as you read them!

Bridal Portrait Shot: Watching for the Groom

Mother of the Bride, isn’t this photo gorgeous and precious all at the same time? I may be a little biased since the bride is my sweet daughter Kristin, but this particular pose of watching for the groom conveys so much—grown up beauty and the promise of joy as well as little girl excitement and overflowing love. As they say, a picture is worth a thousand words.

Notice how Kristin’s photographer, Chris Humphrey, chose a beautiful spot for this shot and took advantage of perfect afternoon sunlight coming through the windows. You might ask your daughter’s photographer if he knows a location where he might be able to get a similar shot of your bride-to-be.

So MOB, when it comes time for your daughter’s bridal portrait day—one of the most delightful wedding planning days you’ll experience, by the way—keep your fingers crossed for a “watching for the groom” shot. I promise it will immediately become a favorite!
