A Date with My Christmas Tree

My friends, I’m thirsty. Thirsty for a date with my Christmas tree. And no, I don’t want my tree to take me out on the town. Quite the contrary. I’m talking about one-on-one time right here at home.

You see, December is at it again. The days are disappearing before I have a chance to enjoy them as fully as I’d like, and it’s time to do something about it. It’s time to get proactive.

Yes, it’s time to step away from the stream of holiday activity and set aside time to soak up the beauty and peace that quiet interludes before my Christmas tree affords. Oh, I ‘ve enjoyed snatches of quiet time in front of my tree already, but those tastes of joy make me thirsty for more. I don’t want the season to go by without spending more extended times there. Anyone else feel the same need?

What can we find when we take time for such private holiday moments? We’ll find space to breath during the press of the season. We’ll find memories of earlier Christmases celebrated with family and friends. We’ll find joy in the beauty of the tree and in the spirit of worship a time of reflection inspires. And as all of this works together, we’ll find contentment settling over us and wrapping us in folds of love and peace and gratitude.

Does that sound as good to you as it does to me? Then what are we waiting for? Let’s spend some quality time cozied up next to the tree and let the wonder of the season work its magic. Let’s go on a very important date. And no excuses. It’s come as we are—to the tree and to the Lord. Just the way we need it.

“Whoever is thirsty, let him come; and whoever wishes, let him take of the free gift of the water of life.” Revelation 22:17b

  1. Love this thoughts, Cheryl. I love my tree, especially the lights and all the “red” mixed in. And especially at night . . .

I’m going to make a date with my tree! Now to find the quiet to enjoy it privately might be a task.

    Beautiful!

  2. I’ve noticed my quiet time during this Advent season has lengthened in duration, much of it spent quietly in front of my tree early in the morning and in the evening before my husband arrives home from work.

  3. Thanks, Elaine! Good luck finding that private time. I know it’s a challenge with kids still at home! :)

Annette, I do the same thing. I love having the tree up!

  4. I try to spend quiet time each evening in front of our Christmas tree. I especially enjoy it in the evenings. I keep the tree lights on all the time when I’m home, so I go into the living room, turn on some relaxing Christmas music, get comfortable on the sofa with a warm blanket, and…..

    and…..

    Zzzzzzzzzzzzz. Happens. Every. Time. LOL!

I have been very busy this first two weeks of December, determined to get everything done EARLY, so that the last couple of weeks will be relaxing time spent with family, enjoying the season.

    Great post!

  5. Beth, I keep my tree lights on all the time when I’m home, too! Sounds like you get good and relaxed when you spend quiet time with your tree — but hey, sleep is important this time of year, right?! :)

  6. Ahhh, I did that last night too. It was relaxing to simply sink into the couch, watch the lights, and snuggle my kids and my man.

    Have a lovely afternoon, Cheryl.

  7. I confess I was a wee bit early in getting my tree up this year: a week before Thanksgiving, to be exact! I have long been a tree-dweller, relishing the hot-cocoa-moments before all things twinkling. Some of my deepest prayers are born at times such as these.

  8. Jennifer, so glad you’ve been enjoying your tree so much, and Kathleen, love how you said that some of your deepest prayers are born during these kinds of moments. I know exactly what you mean!
