In Spite of the Fog

2057431392_f8278c42fbWhat’s the first window you look out of each morning? With the blinds still closed in my bedroom and no windows in the adjoining bath, I usually head over to the next room (my office) before glancing out at the new day. I love to lift the blinds there first to get an early morning view of the birdfeeder. The other morning, however, I had to do a double-take.

Instead of clear skies and the soft morning light I expected to see, thick fog met my early morning check of the day. What’s up with this? The weatherman hadn’t mentioned fog on the late news the night before. But then again, Mother Nature outwitted the forecast last week as well.

I left the fog in all its ghostly glory for a short time to attend to a few little tasks before heading to the kitchen. Since it was still cold outside, I poked my head only out the door to bask in some early morning moments with the world around me — and with the Creator of it all.

The fog certainly obscured my vision, cutting short the distance I could survey, but I couldn’t help but notice that this unexpected weather phenomenon had a beauty all its own. The pure white of the cloudy visitor felt soft and gentle and welcomed me to relish it in a new way. With not being able to see the vibrant images I’m accustomed to, the sounds around me seemed to ring out more clearly. The melodies of the birds quickly captured my attention. As ever, their songs lifted my spirit and made me smile.

And then it dawned on me. In spite of the fog, in spite of obscured vision and the uncertainty of the beyond, the birds still sang. Their voices rang out strong and unhindered. They didn’t let the fog stop them from singing.

How much more should I continue singing the praises of my Creator, the praises of my Savior, when the fogs of life’s situations envelop me? Oh, that my voice will ring out in praise and thanksgiving even when I can’t see clearly, even when I’m confused or uncertain. And maybe, just maybe, my song will lift the spirit of someone else. Let it be so, my Lord!

“I will extol the Lord at all times; his praise will always be on my lips.” Psalm 34:1

Midweek Morsel: Generosity Boomerang

5782660604_49cfa27023_z

“A generous man will prosper; he who refreshes others will himself be refreshed.” Proverbs 11:25

My husband Don is a generous guy. I think his spiritual gift must be giving. I make efforts to be generous, too, but for Don it comes naturally. He almost always outdoes me in the giving department. What can I say, he’s a giver.

The generosity principle found in the verse above—the generosity boomerang, if you will—has proven true in our lives time and again. We are so blessed. As they say, you can’t out-give God.

Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.” Luke 6:38

*What are some ways other than financially that we can be generous? How might we refresh others? I’ll start us off. How about being generous with smiles? :) :) :)

*I hope this encore post from March 2013 inspires or encourages someone in a special way today!

Cute Wedding Day Photo: Groom’s Reminder

179319163_062e0018ef_z

Looking for great wedding day photo ideas, Mother of the Bride? The one I’m sharing today is super cute and features the groom. And yes, even though your mind is focused mainly on the bride, you don’t want to forget to focus on the groom every now and then, right?

Look carefully at the photo above and you’ll see this groom’s cheat sheet, his reminder of the words he needs to speak to seal the deal. What fun, huh? And such a simple shot to set up. Just make sure the best man reminds your soon-to-be son to write the reminder on his hand!

Run this idea past the bride and groom, MOB, and see if it brings some chuckles. If it does, bet you’ll have another shot to add to your list for the photographer!

9 Connections to Improve Your Life

53371612_bd8183988e_bWho isn’t eager to improve her life, even in a small way, when she has the opportunity? Most of us love to find simple ways to make our lives richer, ways that are within the reach of all. After all, we want to enjoy our time here on earth to the fullest, don’t we?

One simple way to improve our lives is through connecting—both with people and with things. Every time we connect we’re taking a step outside of ourselves, and that’s a great step to take. Too much self-focus and/or living in a too-small world we’ve built for ourselves will drain us of joy and zap our energy levels.

So who or what can we connect with that will bring positive changes or vibes to our lives? Here are nine connections that can make a difference. Why not try them all?

1. Connect with God. No better connection in the world, right? When we connect with God through worship, prayer, or reading his Word, he infuses our lives with what we need on any given day—peace, joy, comfort, inspiration, perseverance. The list goes on.

2. Connect with loved ones and friends. Whether it’s a family member, a dearly loved friend, or a more casual friend, we receive an immediate boost from a conversation, a look, a smile, a hug, a note of encouragement, an interaction through social media, or another gesture from a fellow sojourner in life. It’s a good reminder to keep our interactions positive so we can provide that same loving boost to those we care about.

3. Connect with nature. Stepping out into the great outdoors and connecting with the creative wonders of our mighty God can soothe our spirits and energize us at the same time. After all, when we connect with nature, it’s just another way to connect with God, right?

4. Connect with strangers. Yes, we can even improve our lives when we connect with strangers. As we extend a smile and kind word to those we come in contact with, we’ll feel positive energy and be a blessing to them as well. We might even open the door to a new friendship!

5. Connect with the written word. As we read (or write!) books, articles, poetry, and other material, we enlarge our worlds and/or make it possible to see things in new and different ways. We gain information, inspiration, comfort, and encouragement. And of course, the most important written word—God’s Word—will make all the difference in our lives.

6. Connect with music. Whether listening, singing, playing, or composing, interacting with music moves us. Like nature, it can soothe or energize. Like the written word, it can inspire, comfort, and encourage. Our lives are simply better with music. Music gives joy.

7. Connect with art. Enjoying the beauty of stories told through drawings, paintings, sculptures, photographs, and other creative endeavors adds yet another layer of wonder and inspiration to our lives. Both observing and participating enrich us.

8. Connect with good food. Oh yes, good food—whether good-for-us food, new-to-us food, comfort food, or special-treat foods, food improves our lives. Of course, we need food to live, but it also adds joy, refreshment, and adventure to our days.

9. Connect with knowledge. I touched on this when mentioning the written word, but we can connect with knowledge in a variety of ways. Just think of all the ways we learn and gather information. Hopefully, when we connect with knowledge, we grow. And along the way, a special bonus comes when wisdom is acquired.

So friends, let’s take time to connect—today and every day!

“Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.” James 1:17

*Which of these connections do you enjoy the most? What else can you add to the list?

Bride’s Hair Accessory: Baby’s Breath!

14857618357_c006c9d212_z

Mother of the Bride, if your daughter has already chosen her gown, chances are she’s now considering hair accessories for her big day. Brides today have lots of options to consider. Veil or no veil, a single flower on the side or a flower crown, a tiara or exquisite barrette or bridal comb?

One inexpensive idea that looks classic, elegant, and oh so feminine, is a simple spray or a crown of baby’s breath. Baby’s breath would beautifully complement almost any wedding gown and would look especially striking against dark hair (as pictured above). I’m sure it would look great with any hair color, though, so don’t rule this idea out if your daughter is a blonde beauty, MOB.

So if your sweet girl is in the throes of bridal hair decisions, Mother of the Bride, mention this idea or shoot her the link to this post. She might just say, “Baby’s breath it is!”
