Midweek Morsel: Simple Prayers, Powerful Prayers

14074318984_e87fdb1561_z*Don’t miss some exciting personal news at the end of this post!

God hears the simplest prayers we utter—and they may just be the most powerful.

In the days right after my husband’s serious injury from a roof-high fall from a ladder, I was overwhelmed and just trying to do the next thing I needed to do. I’m so thankful people were praying for us because many times I was so overloaded I didn’t have the presence of mind to pray myself.

One of the first prayers I prayed during that demanding and exhausting time was simply “Forgive. Help.” I don’t even remember what I needed forgiveness for, but that plea and also my cry for help voiced my basic needs at that time. And aren’t those the basic needs we all have before the Father?

And with that simple prayer, I knew that it was enough—I knew that I was heard and that God was pleased with my desire to connect with him.

Simple prayers, powerful prayers. Prayers that are dear to God’s heart. Prayers that I need to pray more often.

“The LORD has heard my cry for mercy; the LORD accepts my prayer.” Psalm 6:9

*When have you cried out to God with a simple prayer?

*Important personal news: God has heard our cries for mercy—our daughter Kristin and son-in-law Shawn are now the parents of beautiful twin boys! And yes, that means I am now a grandma! Woohoo!! The entire family is so incredibly grateful for this double blessing from God after such a long wait. Little Isaiah and James are truly gifts from Him. Thanks to each of you who have prayed for this day with us! Find more info on my Facebook page!

  1. Cheryl – What a beautiful thought! I couldn’t agree more. Simple prayers are often the most powerful prayers. Blessings to you and your husband. I am so happy he is on the road to recovery. May 2015 bring you happiness and writing successes by the score.

  2. This reminds me of something I heard by Anne Lamott – the only 2 prayers really needed are “thank you thank you thank you” and “help me help me help me”. I think “Forgive me” is right up there too. What a crazy time of difficulty and excitement all blended together!

    • You’re right, Jana. The last couple of months have indeed been a wild and crazy time for us! By the way, I think Anne Lamott has a book out called Help, Thanks, Wow. I haven’t read it yet, but I bet it has to do with the prayers you heard her refer to!
